About Mark Russell

Over the past 40 years Mark Russell has passionately, progressively, and uncompromisingly worked to become the remarkable horseman that he is today. Known as a “trainer’s trainer”, Mark is a master of equine ergonomics and is sought out for his remarkable depth of knowledge. Over the years Mark has worked through multiple disciplines leading him to believe that Classical Dressage benefitted all disciplines of riding. Many years ago he found himself drawn to the dressage teachings of the old masters who promoted the benefits of suppleness and flexion in the horse. These included Francois Robichon de la Gueriniere, Francois Boucher, Gustav Steinbrecht, and General Decarpentry. While integrating these philosophies into his riding and training, Mark completed his transformation after traveling to Portugal in 1984 to study under world renowned Portugese classical horse trainer and rider Nuno Oliveira. What Mark experienced was a remarkable partnership that transcended everything he had previously learned about the relationship between horse and rider. He saw both horse and rider communicate as equals. The desire to achieve such a partnership led Mark to further his lifelong quest to pursue the Art of riding.

Mark@TwinWillows2007 076Twenty years ago, Mark was introduced to Natural Horsemanship philosophies, which he discovered merged beautifully with the Artistic Dressage he loved. He began studying the teachings of the Dorrances, Ray Hunt, and Pat Parelli, and others. He continues to study and practice in both worlds; little did he know that he had finally come to complete the circle.

As a result of Mark Russell’s seamless fusion of Artistic Dressage with Natural Horsemanship he has developed a strong and dedicated following. Mark has a supportive and thoughtful approach with all of his students; whether they are novices or equine professionals. Mark Russell’s students are offered information and assistance which they can apply to whatever discipline of riding they enjoy, be it Dressage, Western performance, Eventing, or simply trail riding. Mark Russell’s students do have one thing in common: they aspire to a satisfying alliance with their horses, resulting in many mutual rewards. They are all individuals who seek a better way for themselves and especially for their horses. Mark’s multi layered approach helps all of these rides achieve their goals, and helps them to achieve deeper understanding and relationship with their equine partners.
